H.P.Linder & Vlok, Pl. Syst. Evol. 175: 156 (1991)
Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.2–0.7 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched (rarely branching), smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.2–0.7 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–2 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches present or absent. Sterile branches present post flowering. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20–30 mm long, dark brown, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro absent. Sterile branch leaf-sheath 1.5 mm long, hyaline shoulder 2–3 mm long, leaf-blade 4–5 mm long; leaf blade 0.1 mm wide (acicular). Males: male inflorescence with 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 50–150 mm long, 20–80 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent (like sheaths), upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, elliptical (narrowly), apex rounded, 4.5–8 mm, 1–2 mm, with 4–7 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 3–5 mm long, oblong, acute, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, more or less concolorous, but with a narrow membranous margin. Male flower 1.8–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous or cartilaginous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1–1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 30–120 mm long, 10–40 mm wide, with 21–50 spikelets or 51–100 spikelets. Female spathes as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous (apex continued as a long acicular awn, overtopping the spikelet). Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching (stiff and branching), ovate, apex acute, 4.5–6.5 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 3–5 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2–3 mm long, ovate, rounded or obtuse or acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4–4.5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 4–4.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 4–4.5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 3.5–4 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white or pink, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed 1.5 mm long (seed data based on a single immature seed, quite unreliable), 0.7 mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, brown, striate.
