Vegetative parts: plants clumped, 0.4–0.8 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–1 m, crown diameter 0.3–1 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 3–5 mm in diam., culms 2–5 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous, 0.4–0.8 m tall, diameter at base 1–2 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 35–50 mm long, dark brown or speckled paler, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro absent. Males: male inflorescence with 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 60–200 mm long, 30–80 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, elliptical, apex rounded or obtuse or acute, 4–8 mm, 1.5–2.5 mm, with 3–6 flowers, pedicels as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 2–5 mm long, oblong, rounded or obtuse or acute or apiculate, chartaceous or membranous (margins), bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals or conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence linear or paniculate or racemose, 35–300 mm long, 5–15 mm wide, with 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets. Female spathes as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent (similar to the spathes), chartaceous (becoming lacerated). Female spikelet pedicel much branched (stiffly erect), ovate, apex obtuse or acute, 6–8 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 3–7 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2.5–3 mm long, ovate, rounded or apiculate, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 3–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 3–5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed surface type 10, (1.2–)1.65(–1.84) mm long, (0.64–)0.95(–1.24) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, brown or grey, colliculate or rugose.
