Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 1–2 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–1 m, crown diameter 1–2 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms much branched or branches whorled at each node, smooth, olivaceous, 0.3–2 m tall, diameter at base 3–5 mm, diameter at apex 0.05–1 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20–50 mm long, dark brown, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous or broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro absent. Sterile branch leaf-sheath 1 mm long, hyaline shoulder 2 mm long, leaf-blade 4 mm long; leaf blade 0.1 mm wide (acicular). Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets (thus interpreting the inflorescence only as the branch tip, and not as the whole culm), racemose, 5–15 mm long, 2–5 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent (like sheaths), like the floral bracts, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical or ovate, apex obtuse, 3.5–6 mm, 1.5–3 mm, with 4–6 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile or shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 2–3 mm long, oblong, rounded, chartaceous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals or conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1–1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence racemose, 3–15 mm long, 2–4 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes like floral bracts, persistent, chartaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, ovate or obovate, apex rounded or obtuse, 3.5–7 mm long, with 1–5 flowers, with 2–4 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 1.5–4 mm long, ovate, rounded or acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.5–4 mm long, straight or curved, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 2.5–4 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 2.5–4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 2.5–4 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, red, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed surface type 10.
