Vegetative parts: plants tufted or tangled (Usually forming tangled clumps), 0.3–0.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.15 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons or with stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely warty or roughly warty (culms of some plants are completely smooth while most plants have papillose culms - this is not always visible at low magnification), green or olivaceous, 0.25–0.5 m tall, diameter at base 0.7–1.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.7–1.3 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 12–35 mm long, orange to reddish-brown, usually quite glossy, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro hair-like, straight and erect or recurved or twisted (recurved or twisted often due to length), 5–12 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets, paniculate or globose (several branches branch off the main culm, with each bearing a 'bunch' of spikelets, sometimes single spikelets occur), 8–40 mm long, 2–20 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets or as tall as spikelets or taller than spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 7–12 mm, 1.7–3.5 mm, with 3–10 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts taller than flowers, 4–7 mm long, oblong or orbicular, obtuse or acute or acuminate, coriaceous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body, variable in shape. Male flower 3–5.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong or elliptical (outer oblong inner elliptical), inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous or keel densely villous. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or globose, 10–30 mm long, 4–20 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, cartilaginous (hard and sturdy). Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet pedicel simple, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 10–25 mm long, with 6–15 flowers, with 0–1 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 5.5–13 mm long, oblong, rounded or obtuse, coriaceous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 5–10 mm long, regular, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 5–9 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate, 5–9 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 4.5–8 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, white or pink (maybe age related?), 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.5–)1.88(–2.12) mm long, (0.86–)1.31(–1.52) mm in diameter, shape in side view ovate, shape in diameter round in cross section, white, pitted.
