Vegetative parts: plants tufted (Hemi-spherical in side view), 0.45–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–1 m, crown diameter 0.5–1 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, roughly warty (almost varruculose - papillae are rather uneven), olivaceous, 0.45–0.55 m tall, diameter at base 1.2–2.2 mm, diameter at apex 0.4–0.6 mm. Branch axil indumentum present. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 6–23 mm long, margins entire, orange to reddish brown, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, obtuse or rounded. Sheath-mucro penicellate or hair-like, straight and erect, 5–10 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 8–23 mm long, 1–5 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts or shorter than spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous (not too thick). Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or elliptical, apex acute or undifferentiated, 3.5–11 mm, 0.8–1.6 mm, with 4–10 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 2.8–3.8 mm long, oblong or elliptical or ovate, obtuse or acute, margins shallowly toothed, chartaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body or between half and as long as the bract body. Male flower 2–3 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong or elliptical or ovate, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 8–70 mm long, 2–10 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, elliptical or undifferentiated, apex obtuse or acute or undifferentiated, 8–18 mm long, with 6–20 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts as tall as flowers, erect, 5–9.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse or acute, coriaceous (not too thick), apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, margins entire or shallowly lacerated or toothed, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 4.5–7 mm long, regular, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals coriaceous or cartilaginous (similar to the bracts), keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous or keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.5–7 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate, 4.5–7 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 4.5–7 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 1 locule, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.56–)1.66(–1.72) mm long, (0.96–)1.29(–1.56) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter elliptical in cross section, translucent or white, smooth.
