Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.3–0.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.1 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.3 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 2–3 mm in diam., culms 2–4 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched or sparingly branched, smooth, olivaceous, 0.3–0.5 m tall, diameter at base 0.7–1.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1.2 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 12–30 mm long, brown, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 1–1.5 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 5–15 mm long, membranous shoulders are longer than the body of the bract. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 10–30 mm long, 7–15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts (but with a longer awn), coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or elliptical, apex rounded, 12–20 mm, 5–8 mm, with 6–8 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 7–12 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body (narrowly), bract awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body (on basal bracts only), brown, lower bracts with lacerating membranous margins. Male flower 4.5–6 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 2–2.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence racemose, 17–35 mm long, 7–20 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets (rarely more than 3). Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or membranous (large membranous apical lobes, soon lacerating). Female spikelet sessile, oblong or elliptical, apex rounded or acute, 10–20 mm long, with 6–10 flowers, with 1–3 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 6–9 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract (but the margin all around can be narrowly membranous), same as body of bract, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body (on the basal bracts). Female flower 4–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate, 4–5.3 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 3.3–4.5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed 1.3–1.6 mm long, (0.84–)0.94(–1.04) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical or oblong, shape in diameter rectangular in cross section, grey, colliculate or rugose.
