Vegetative parts: plants clumped or tufted, 1–2 m tall, basal diameter 0.4–1 m, crown diameter 0.6–1 m, with stolons. Fertile culms branching or much branched, square, smooth, olivaceous, 1–2 m tall, diameter at base 4–6.5 mm, diameter at apex 1.8–2.5 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches present. Sterile branches present while flowering or present post flowering. Sheaths persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 10–60 mm long, olivaceous, turning gray, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent or membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.01 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 1–4 mm long. Sterile branch leaf-sheath 2.5–3.5 mm long, hyaline shoulder 0.5–1 mm long, leaf-blade 1.5–2.5 mm long; leaf blade 0.2 mm wide. Males: male inflorescence with 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets or 501 and more spikelets, paniculate, 250–350 mm long, 50–80 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts, chartaceous or cartilaginous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or ovate, apex rounded, 4–8 mm, 2–5 mm, with 3–8 flowers, pedicels longer than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 1.5–2.5 mm long, ovate, acuminate, chartaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 1.9–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, chartaceous or cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1–1.3 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 200–350 mm long, 80–120 mm wide, with 51–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, elliptical or ovate or obovate, apex rounded, 5–10 mm long, with 1–4 flowers, with 1–3 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2.5–3.5 mm long, ovate, acute, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.8–3.8 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth or keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2.8–3.8 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 2.8–3.5 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 2.3–3 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules or 2 locules or 1 locule (often only one developed), dehiscent or capsules thinwalled, sometimes dropping with seed in. Fruit: seed 1.3–1.4 mm long, (0.92–)0.99(–1.12) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, brown, smooth.
