Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.3–1.8 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–1 m, crown diameter 0.3–1 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons or with stolons. Fertile culms branching, finely warty or roughly warty, olivaceous, 0.3–2 m tall, diameter at base 1–6 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–2.5 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 15–35 mm long, reddish, densely papillate, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders small, rounded or tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 0.2–0.4 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or truncate. Sheath-mucro penicellate or clavate, straight and erect or recurved, 4–10 mm long, distinctively papillate. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets, racemose or paniculate, 25–80 mm long, 10–20 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets or as tall as spikelets or taller than spikelets (but always quite prominent), coriaceous, similar to sheaths, but not as prominently papillose. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or obovate, apex rounded, 12–20 mm, 5–15 mm, with 6–10 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile or shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts taller than flowers or more than twice as tall as flowers (usually), 6–11 mm long, oblong, rounded or acute, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, pale to reddish. Male flower 3.9–4.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel densely villous. Anthers 2–2.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence racemose, 25–110 mm long, 10–20 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets (slightly), not obscuring spikelet, persistent, coriaceous or chartaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, oblong or obovate, apex truncate or rounded, 15–30 mm long, with 6–12 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts at least twice as long as flowers, 8–18 mm long, oblong, acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.4–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.4–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 4–4.5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 4–4.5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.52–)1.58(–1.68) mm long, (0.92–)1.03(–1.12) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter triangular in cross section (vaguely) or plano-convex in cross section, yellow, smooth (shiny).
