Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, smooth or finely warty, olivaceous, 0.5–1 m tall, diameter at apex 0.3–0.8 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 5–20 mm long, olive-green, turning grey, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.01 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 2.5–5 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets, racemose or paniculate, 50–110 mm long, 10–15 mm wide. Female bracts as tall as flowers, 4–7 mm long, ovate, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells, darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 5–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length.
