Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 1–1.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–0.5 m, crown diameter 1–2 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, smooth or finely warty, olivaceous, 1–1.5 m tall, diameter at apex 0.2–0.7 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 8–40 mm long, brown, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 1–3 mm long, the upper acuminate portion of the sheaths have strong veins, but the areas between the veins decay readily, eventually the whole apical portion falls apart. Males: male inflorescence with 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets, paniculate, 40–150 mm long, 20–80 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, minute or shorter than spikelets, coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, oblong or elliptical, apex rounded or acute, 6–15 mm, 3–10 mm, with 4–12 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 5.5–7.5 mm long, oblong or ovate, acuminate, chartaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin with honeycombed cells, which eventually decay (these occupy 2/3–3/4 of the bract surface), bract awn minute or absent, with a narrow membranous margin, while the most of the back is of foveolate cells, red-brown in colour, and only the bract base consists of ordinary cells. Male flower 2.5–4 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals or inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous or keel densely villous. Anthers 1.4–1.8 mm long, included in the flowers or exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate or racemose, 20–70 mm long, 10–35 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets (similar to bracts), persistent, cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, oblong or elliptical, apex rounded or acute, 15–20 mm long, with 3–6 flowers, with 2–5 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 9–16 mm long, oblong or ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells (making up most of the body of the bract, but margins are membranous), paler than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.5–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous or keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.5–6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 4.5–6 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 4–5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed 1.2–1.7 mm long, 0.5–0.8 mm in diameter, shape in side view oblong, shape in diameter round in cross section or triangular in cross section, tan, smooth; funicular elaiosome present (only dried seed seen, and these have a distinctive "stalk").
