Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.4–0.6 m tall, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms branching, smooth or finely rugulose (in the upper portions of the culm) or roughly warty (on the basal portions of the culms), olivaceous, 0.4–0.6 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–1.3 mm, diameter at apex 0.2–0.4 mm. Sheaths loosely convoluted, 6–20 mm long, very pale brown, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 0.2–0.5 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 2–4 mm long, slightly divergent acute membranous sheath shoulders are very striking. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 8–45 mm long, 6–10 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous, similar to sheaths, with large membranous shoulders. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong, apex rounded, 5–10 mm, 4–6 mm, with 7–15 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 2.5–4 mm long, ovate, acute or apiculate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, chartaceous or cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.5–1.6 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence racemose, 6–45 mm long, 6–10 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile, oblong or ovate, apex rounded, 5–12 mm long, with 2–11 flowers, with 2–4 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 3–5 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells (almost half of the bracts, especially down the midvein), darker than body of bract, margins shallowly lacerated or toothed, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3–4 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 3–4 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 3–4 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (0.84–)1.36(–1.56) mm long, (0.76–)0.91(–1.12) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter triangular in cross section, brown.
