Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.4–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.2–0.4 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.4–1 m tall, diameter at base 0.7–1.4 mm, diameter at apex 0.3–0.7 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 7–20 mm long, olivaceous, turning brown, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body, hyaline shoulders small, rounded, hyaline shoulder 0.1–0.3 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, obtuse or truncate. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 2–7 mm long, membranous shoulders lost almost immediately, leaving coriacous truncate sheath with awn. Males: male inflorescence with 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets, paniculate, 40–80 mm long, 25–40 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, minute or like the floral bracts, coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, elliptical, apex acute, 9–14 mm, 2–3 mm, with 5–7 flowers, pedicels longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 5–6.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse or acute, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, uniformly dark brown. Male flower 3–3.6 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1.3–1.5 mm long, included in the flowers (at least, this is what it looks like!). Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 25–80 mm long, 10–25 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets. Female spathes insignificant, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple or pedicel sparsely branching, elliptical or obovate, apex rounded or acute, 15–20 mm long, with 3–8 flowers, with 1–5 sterile bracts. Female bracts at least twice as long as flowers, 8–13 mm long, oblong, obtuse or acute, chartaceous (with distinct and striking veins), apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4–4.2 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–4.2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 4–4.2 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 4–4.2 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.12–)1.32(–1.6) mm long, (0.92–)1.06(–1.32) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, silvery, colliculate.
