Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.08–0.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.15 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.3 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or roughly warty, green, 0.08–0.5 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–1.8 mm, diameter at apex 0.4–1 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 4–18 mm long, margins entire, greenish/tan to orange or reddish-brown, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 0.5 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, truncate. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect or recurved, 1–6 mm long, sheath shoulders and mucro drop off soon. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets, racemose, 18–70 mm long, 5–15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts or shorter than spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, at least some curved, apex acute, 7–18 mm, 0.9–2.5 mm, with 4–12 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 5–10 mm long, oblong or elliptical, obtuse or acute or acuminate, margins entire, cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body. Male flower 3.5–7 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, linear or oblong or elliptical, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1.5–3 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 18–65 mm long, 2–9 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, cartilaginous (thick). Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, elliptical, apex undifferentiated, 5.5–20 mm long, with 2–15 flowers, with 1 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 4.5–11.5 mm long, oblong or ovate, rounded or obtuse or acute (bracts of large spikelets are obtuse or rounded), coriaceous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 3.5–7 mm long, regular, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals coriaceous or cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth or keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib raised (slightly), margins entire, apices acute, inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, hidden by bracts, or bracts are shorter than flowers, 3.5–6.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 3.5–6.5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 3–5.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, red, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.48–)1.58(–1.76) mm long, (0.72–)1(–1.12) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter triangular in cross section, silvery or white, colliculate (either with large uneven bumps or fairly smooth but with a "wavy" latitudinally pattern).
