Vegetative parts: plants mat-Forming, 0.5–0.8 m tall, with stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose or finely warty, olivaceous, 0.4–0.8 m tall, diameter at base 1.5–3.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1.5 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent or present. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 6–23 mm long, margins entire, tan with reddish-brown to dark-brown speckles and a darker margin at apex, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, obtuse. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1.5–3 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets, racemose, 7–70 mm long, 2–10 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or elliptical, at least some curved, apex acute or undifferentiated, 5–25 mm, 1.5–2.5 mm, with 8–35 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 3–5 mm long, oblong, rounded or obtuse, coriaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent, strikingly bicoloured, with the membranous margin contrasting with the darker body of the bracts. Male flower 3.5–5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals (slightly), chartaceous, petals chartaceous, oblong or elliptical, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.5–1.9 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 7–100 mm long, 2–10 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, cartilaginous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, oblong or elliptical, apex acute or undifferentiated, 7–25 mm long, with 8–25 flowers, with 1 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 4–5.5 mm long, oblong, obtuse or acute, coriaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3–4 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer (inner often slightly shorter than outer whorl). Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 3–3.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate, 3–3.5 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 2–3 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, 2.
