Harvey, W.H., although based in the Cape only from 1835 to 1842 (during which period he was absent in England for almost a year) had a huge impact on South African botany. Harvey produced the first "modern" account of the genera of Cape plants, and eventually, with Sonder, started the Flora Capensis. These works formed the foundation on which the work of Bolus, Marloth, and many others was based.

Male flower 3–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, chartaceous, petals membranous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate or as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 0.6–1 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile, ovate or orbicular, apex rounded or undifferentiated, 2.5–3.5 mm long, with 1–2 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers, 1.4–2.4 mm long, ovate, acute or apiculate, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, lax, exposing spikelet axis, awn minute or absent. Female flower 1.3–1.7 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel.
