Vegetative parts: plants mat-Forming or tangled, 0.5–1 m tall, with stolons. Fertile culms branching or much branched, finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.3–1 m tall, diameter at base 0.8–2 mm, diameter at apex 0.2–0.3 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted or loosely convoluted (slightly), 4–10(–20) mm long, tan, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders small, rounded or membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.1 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or rounded. Sheath-mucro penicellate or clavate, straight and erect, 0.5–2 mm long, surface striate. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 5–15 mm long, 3–6 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts, coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or ovate, apex rounded or obtuse, 6–9 mm, 3.5–8 mm, with 3–8 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers or more than twice as tall as flowers, 3–6 mm long, oblong or ovate, acute, lax (sometimes at or after anthesis) or imbricate, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract or membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent, remarkably variable, from short, slightly longer than flowers, to much longer. Male flower 2.5–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, linear or oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.3–1.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets (usually) or as long as the spikelets (rarely), persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile, obtriangular, apex truncate, 6–7.5 mm long, with 1–2 flowers, with 0–2 sterile bracts. Female bracts as tall as flowers (rarely) or taller than flowers, 3–5.5 mm long, oblong or ovate, acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, paler than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.5–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous (sepals) or membranous (petals), glabrous and smooth or keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2.5–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 2.5–5 mm long. Female inner tepals linear or oblong, 2.5–5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.12–)1.39(–1.6) mm long, (0.88–)0.9(–1.04) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, tan, smooth (shiny).
