Vegetative parts: plants clumped, 0.3–1.2 m tall, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms branching, smooth or finely warty, olivaceous, 0.3–1.2 m tall, diameter at base 1.5–3.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.3–0.8 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 8–30 mm long, brown, shiny, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.05 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, obtuse or truncate. Sheath-mucro awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 2–4 mm long, sheath apices decaying rapidly, leaving ragged, truncate remnants. Males: male inflorescence with 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 60–130 mm long, 30–50 mm wide, spathes persistent, spathes shorter than spikelets, spathes coriaceous, only on main sheath. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex acute, 5 mm, 1.8 mm, with 3 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 3–4 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin with honeycombed cells, which eventually decay (this extends over most of the bract), bract awn minute or absent, most of bracts with foveolate cells, only the basal portion with normal cells. Male flower 3–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 70–130 mm long, 15–40 mm wide, with 21–50 spikelets or 51–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets (only along main axis), persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching or pedicel much branched, elliptical or ovate, apex acute, 6–12 mm long, with 2–6 flowers, with 3–10 sterile bracts (more in Kamiesberg than Cederberg). Female bracts shorter than flowers (when seed is shed) or as tall as flowers (at anthesis), 3–5 mm long, ovate, acute or apiculate, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells (very wide, taking up most of the bract), darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.2–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals coriaceous or cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.2–6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 4–6 mm long. Female inner tepals linear or oblong, 3.5–6 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent.
