Vegetative parts: plants tufted or tangled, 0.15–0.4 m tall, basal diameter 0.01–0.3 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.5 m, with stolons. Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely warty, green, 0.1–0.4 m tall, diameter at base 0.2–0.9 mm, diameter at apex 0.15–0.6 mm. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, closely convoluted, 5–14 mm long, orange or light to dark-brown, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders small, rounded (not too small), apex, excluding the membranous lobes, rounded or truncate. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect or recurved, 1–5 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets, sparsely paniculate or racemose or paniculate, 12–60 mm long (hard to determine what to term an inflorescence), 8–12 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex undifferentiated, 6–10 mm, 1.5–2 mm, with 3–6 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular or flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers (the bract's awn often stretches above the flower), 4.5–6.5 mm long, elliptical or obovate, obtuse or acute, coriaceous or chartaceous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body. Male flower 3.5–5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, linear, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.4–1.6 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence sparsely paniculate, 10–50 mm long (hard to determine what to term an inflorescence), 8–15 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet pedicel simple, elliptical or undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 4.5–6.5 mm long, with 2 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers (sometimes slightly taller), erect, 4–6 mm long, oblong or elliptical (broadly), acuminate, coriaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 3.5–4.2 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals chartaceous or cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, margins entire, apices obtuse or acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2–3 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate, 2–3 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 2–3 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, red, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.2–)1.48(–2) mm long, (0.64–)0.94(–1.2) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, white.
