Vegetative parts: plants clumped or tufted (Forming large stout cushions), 0.3–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.2–1.5 m, crown diameter 0.2–1.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons (but sometimes the base seems to spread). Fertile culms unbranched, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.3–1 m tall, diameter at base 0.3–1 mm, diameter at apex 0.2–0.6 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 12–35 mm long, olive coloured and hard to distinguish from culm, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders small, rounded or membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.05 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 5–15 mm long, mucro often almost as long as sheath. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet (Rarely) or 2–5 spikelets, racemose or globose, 5–20 mm long, 4–7 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets or as tall as spikelets or taller than spikelets (usually only the awn overtopping the spikelet), coriaceous, brown, paler than bracts, usually with a long mucro which overtops the spikelets. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex rounded or obtuse or acute, 5–7 mm, 3–4 mm, with 3–5 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 3–3.5 mm long, oblong, rounded or obtuse, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent (as a subapical mucro), dark brown, almost black in colour. Male flower 3–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals or inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous or keel sparsely villous (hardly visible). Anthers 1–1.8 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence globose or racemose, 5–20 mm long, 5–12 mm wide, with 1 spikelet (very rarely) or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile, elliptical or orbicular, apex rounded or obtuse, 5–7 mm long, with 1–4 flowers, with 4–6 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2.5–3 mm long, oblong, obtuse, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent (at most as a small mucro). Female flower 3.5–3.7 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals or conduplicate, 3–3.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–3.5 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 3–3.5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules or 2 locules or 1 locule (usually only 1–2 locules develop), dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.1–)1.17(–1.32) mm long, (0.7–)0.76(–0.88) mm in diameter, shape in side view oblong, shape in diameter round in cross section or rectangular in cross section, silvery, colliculate.
