Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.3–2 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.3–0.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons (some specimens appear to have a short rhizome). Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, round (not compressed), finely warty (these very distinctive under magnification as pale-green, ragged spots against and olive background), green or olivaceous, 0.3–2 m tall, diameter at base 1–5 mm, diameter at apex 0.3–0.8 mm. Sheaths persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 8–45 mm long, brown turning grey, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent or membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.05–0.1 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate or acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 2–7 mm long, sheath apices decaying rapidly, leaving ragged, truncate remnants, characterized by the persistent, net-like nerves. Males: male inflorescence with 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets, paniculate, 25–160 mm long, 10–50 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, minute to shorter than spikelets (smaller than floral bracts), coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or elliptical or obovate, apex rounded to acute, 7–9 mm, 1.5–4 mm, with 3–5 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets to as long as the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers, 3–5 mm long, ovate, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body or with honeycombed cells, which eventually decay, bract awn minute or absent (large as a mucro), dark-coloured or pale, in some collections looking quite bristly from the acuminate apex. Male flower 3–4.3 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, linear or oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals or inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 15–150 mm long, 10–40 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets or 51–100 spikelets. Female spathes insignificant or shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple or pedicel sparsely branching, oblong or elliptical or ovate or obovate, apex truncate or rounded or obtuse, 6–13 mm long, with 1–3 flowers, with 2–4 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers (shorter and exposing flowers when apices of older bracts decay), 3–8 mm long, oblong or ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells, paler than body of bract or darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 4–9 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.2–9 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 4–8.5 mm long. Female inner tepals linear or oblong, 3.5–7 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.48–)1.64(–1.76) mm long, (0.8–)1.15(–1.44) mm in diameter, shape in side view oblong, shape in diameter plano-convex in cross section, pink, smooth (shiny); funicular elaiosome present (white).
