Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.2–1.6 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.4 m, crown diameter 0.1–1 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons (but actually unknown). Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed) or compressed near apex, finely rugulose or finely warty (and when dried with longitudinal grooving), green or olivaceous, 0.3–1.7 m tall, diameter at apex 0.4–1.3 mm. Sheaths persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 5–40 mm long, dark brown, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.1 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1–3 mm long, rather dull. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets, paniculate, 30–150 mm long, 20–30 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, minute, coriaceous, much smaller than the floral bracts. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical or obovate, apex acute, 8–15 mm, 3–6 mm, with 5–15 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile or shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 4.4–4.8 mm long, oblong or square, obtuse, cartilaginous, bract upper margin with honeycombed cells, which eventually decay, bract awn minute or absent, honey-coloured, striate, with a distinct black upper margin. Male flower 3.9–4.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel densely villous (indumentum also on odd sepal). Anthers 2–2.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 20–180 mm long, 10–25 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets. Female spathes insignificant or shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, elliptical or obovate, apex obtuse or acute, 10–17 mm long, with 1–6 flowers, with 2–4 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 4–10 mm long, oblong or square, obtuse, cartilaginous, apical margin with honeycombed cells, darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.5–9 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous or both lateral sepal keels and odd sepal villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4.5–9 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 4.3–8.5 mm long. Female inner tepals linear or oblong, 4–7 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.4–)2.1(–2.7) mm long, (1.2–)1.59(–2.12) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter triangular in cross section or plano-convex in cross section, brown, smooth (shiny).
