Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.3–0.7 m tall, basal diameter 0.01–0.1 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.7 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched or sparingly branched or branching, round (not compressed), smooth or finely warty, green, 0.3–0.7 m tall, diameter at base 0.3–0.6 mm, diameter at apex 0.2–0.6 mm. Sheaths persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 10–18 mm long, green, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, hyaline shoulder 0.1 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1–3 mm long, rather dull. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets, racemose or paniculate, 20–70 mm long, 10–20 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts, coriaceous, greyer than bracts, with denser texture. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong, apex rounded, 10–20 mm, 3–10 mm, with 5–15 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts more than twice as tall as flowers, 6.5–10 mm long, ovate, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body (sometimes as a stout mucro), brown. Male flower 2.7–4.7 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, linear or oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals (only slightly). Male outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, keel densely villous. Anthers 1.8–2.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence linear, 10–25 mm long, 5–10 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets (usually 1, occasionally 2). Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile, oblong, apex rounded, 10–20 mm long, with 4–11 flowers, with 0–3 sterile bracts. Female bracts at least twice as long as flowers, 8–13 mm long, ovate, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract or with honeycombed cells, same as body of bract or darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 2.5–4 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2.4–3.8 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 2–3.7 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 2.2–2.5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.04–)1.23(–1.56) mm long, (0.6–)0.8(–1.08) mm in diameter, shape in side view oblong, shape in diameter triangular in cross section, silvery, striate.
