Vegetative parts: plants clumped or mat-Forming (plants often forming a turf), 0.2–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–3 m, crown diameter 0.3–3 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons or with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced (rarely collected), 2.5–4 mm in diam., culms 0–10 mm apart. Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), smooth or finely rugulose or roughly warty (especially to the base of the culms: often rough to the touch), olivaceous, 0.15–0.6 m tall, diameter at base 1.6–2.2 mm, diameter at apex 1–1.3 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 30–60 mm long, margins entire, light to dark brown with lighter speckles, tan margins, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 1–10 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or obtuse. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 0.45–2 mm long, the mucro is very a very obvious, elongated feature on the sheaths. Males: male inflorescence with 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets, paniculate, 25–65 mm long, 10–22 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Male spathellae conspicuous, 0.8–1.2 mm long. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 3–5 mm, 2–4 mm, with 2–5 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts shorter than flowers, 0.3–0.7 mm long, ovate, acute, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, they are minute. Male flower 1.5–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, cartilaginous, linear or oblong or elliptical (outer tepals are small and elongated - linear to oblong - while inner tepals are taller and elliptic), inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 1–1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Females: female inflorescence linear, 25–80 mm long, 10–15 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous. Female spathellae conspicuous, 1–2 mm long. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 5–8 mm long, with 1–35 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, erect, 1–1.5 mm long, ovate (ovate but very elongated - 'lanceolate"), aciculate, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 3.5–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface or smaller than nut and not obscuring the nut surface, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, hidden by bracts, or bracts are shorter than flowers, 3.2–4.2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear, 3.2–4.2 mm long. Female inner tepals elliptical or obovate, 3.2–4.2 mm long. Styles white, 2. Style bases seated on a stylopodium (stout styles with free parts shorter than the stylopodium). Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, papery to leathery, not winged. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth, (3.28–)4.07(–4.6) mm long, (1.36–)1.75(–2.08) mm diam., shape in side view obovate, shape in top view elliptical in cross section (two distinct ridges run on either side of the nut), brown. Elaiosome absent.
