Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.2–0.8 m tall, basal diameter 0.01–0.1 m, crown diameter 0.05–0.3 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.2–0.8 m tall, diameter at base 0.8–2 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present or sometimes dropping off, abscission present, loosely convoluted, 10–40 mm long, margins entire, golden tan colouring with reddish speckles or deep reddish-brown, often with underlying tan colouration showing through as speckles, sometimes with tan margins, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro absent or penicellate, straight and erect, 0.5–1 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 25–75 mm long, 8–15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 2.5–4 mm, 1.8–2.8 mm, with 4–5 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts shorter than flowers, ovate or orbicular, rounded or obtuse or acute, chartaceous or membranous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body or like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, bracts are very thin and tear easily, generally two bracts subtending the flowers - thus sterile bract present. Male flower 1.4–1.6 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, chartaceous, petals membranous, ovate or obovate, inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 0.4–1.1 mm long, included in the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 15–60 mm long, 8–15 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, caducous, cartilaginous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 2.5–3 mm long, with 4–9 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, erect, 1–1.5 mm long, ovate, acute, chartaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 1.4–1.7 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals chartaceous or cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals or conduplicate, hidden by bracts, or bracts are shorter than flowers, 1.2–1.6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or elliptical, 1.2–1.6 mm long. Female inner tepals elliptical, 0.8–1.2 mm long. Styles 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, papery to leathery, not winged. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth or wall tuberculate, (0.88–)1.2(–1.68) mm long, (0.56–)0.79(–1.08) mm diam., shape in side view ovate or oblong, shape in top view round in cross section or triangular in cross section, brown. Elaiosome absent.
