Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.25–0.45 m tall, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.15–0.4 m tall, diameter at base 1–2 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present, loosely convoluted, 25–50 mm long, the lower portion is tan with small grey to brown speckles while the upper part of the sheath has a deep reddish-brown colouration with tan margins, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 2–2.5 mm long, the mucro is distinctive. Males: male inflorescence with 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 15–65 mm long, 10–20 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Male spathellae conspicuous, 10–12 mm long. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 7–9 mm, 2.5–4 mm, with 3–5 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts taller than flowers, 3.5–6 mm long, linear or ovate, acute, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body, Like the spathellae, the male bracts are very slender and elongated, which is a distinguishing feature of this species. Male flower 1.5–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, cartilaginous, oblong or ovate, inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 0.8–1.2 mm long, included in the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted, 25–50 mm long, 10–15 mm wide, with 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous. Female spathellae conspicuous. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, ovate, apex acute, 10–14 mm long, with 8 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 5–14 mm long, linear, acute, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 15–20 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals or conduplicate, 1.3–2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 1.3–2 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 1.3–2 mm long. Styles 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits absent. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth, (1.6–)1.65(–1.68) mm long, (0.84–)0.88(–0.92) mm diam., shape in side view obovate, shape in top view triangular in cross section, brown. Elaiosome absent.
