Vegetative parts: plants clumped or tufted (Plants expand sidewards with age), 1-2 m tall, basal diameter 0.2-1 m, crown diameter 0.3-1.5 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 6.5-8.5 mm in diam., culms 2-7 mm apart. Fertile culms sparingly branched, smooth, green or olivaceous, 1-2 m tall, diameter at base 2.5-3.5 mm, diameter at apex 1.3-2 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20-35 mm long, brown with golden speckling, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro absent or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 0-2 mm long, very narrow paler margins, but not really membranous. Males: male inflorescence with 50-100 spikelets or 101-500 spikelets, paniculate, 70-280 mm long, 20-35 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, coriaceous, probably only present in the bud stage. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical or orbicular, apex rounded, 3-5 mm, 2.5-4 mm, with 6-15 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 2-3 mm long, elliptical or ovate, acute or acuminate (then very shortly so), cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent, reddish brown, but with a wide membranous, pale margin all around. Male flower 1.75-2 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong (truncate to rounded), inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1.2-1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence linear, 50-130 mm long, 8-13 mm wide, with 2-5 spikelets or 6-10 spikelets (3-6). Female spathes longer than the spikelets, obscuring spikelet, persistent, coriaceous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, elliptical, apex acute (sometimes tapering to a slender acute apex), 20-30 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 3-6 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 15-23 mm long (lower bracts shorter than upper bracts), ovate (narrowly), acuminate, bony, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower with a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals membranous, glabrous and smooth, smaller than nut and not obscuring the nut surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, margins entire or ciliate, apices variable or truncate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 1-2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal broad-based, with small, variable lobe, 1-2 mm long. Female inner tepals broad-based, with small, variable lobe, 1-2 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles white, 2. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a hard woody ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, membranous, shorter than nut. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth, 9.5-10.5 mm long, 3.1-3.9 mm diam., shape in side view oblong, shape in top view planoconvex in cross section, black. Elaiosome present, white (brown), 2-2.5 mm long, less than half as long as nut.
