Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.3–0.6 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.1 m, crown diameter 0.15–0.4 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose or rugose, olivaceous, 0.3–0.6 m tall, diameter at base 0.3–0.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.3–0.5 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present, loosely convoluted, 10–12 mm long, margins entire, green below, the apical third golden, upper 1/3 in colour and texture abruptly different from the base, and soon decaying, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1 mm long, Sheaths distinctively striated. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 15–25 mm long, 6–8 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong, apex rounded, 6–10 mm, 5 mm, with 20–30 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 4–7 mm long, ovate, acuminate, margins entire, membranous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, tapering to a fine point, but not linear like in many of the other species. Male flower 3–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals less rigid than petals, cartilaginous (inner whorl, outer more membranous), petals cartilaginous, oblong or ovate (outer whorl more ovate), inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, glabrous. Anthers 1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, chartaceous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet obovate, apex rounded, 12–17 mm long, with 30 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts at least twice as long as flowers, erect, 12–14 mm long, ovate, acute or acuminate, chartaceous or membranous, apical margin membranous or like rest of bract, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, margins entire, apices acute, inner whorl longer than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, hidden by bracts, or bracts are shorter than flowers, 1.8–2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 1.7 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 2.4–3 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent.
