Vegetative parts: plants tufted (But with only a few culms), 1–1.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–0.3 m, crown diameter 0.3–0.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous, 1–1.5 m tall, diameter at base 3–4 mm, diameter at apex 1.5–2.5 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 40–60 mm long, yellow-brown, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate (slender, aciculate, caducuous), straight and erect, 4–10 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 80–300 mm long, 30–50 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, elliptical, apex rounded, 4.5–6.5 mm, 2–2.5 mm, with 5–7 flowers, pedicels longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 1.5–2.5 mm long, oblong or ovate, rounded or obtuse, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, cartilaginous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1.2–1.4 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence paniculate, 80–200 mm long, 10–30 mm wide, with 21–50 spikelets or 51–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous or membranous. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, elliptical or ovate, apex obtuse, 5–7 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 3–6 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2–3 mm long, ovate, rounded or obtuse or acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.5–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 4.5–6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 4.5–6 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 4.5–6 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3.
