Vegetative parts: plants tufted or mat-Forming (culms spreading underground), 0.3-0.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.1-1 m, crown diameter 0.1-1 m, with stolons. Fertile culms branching, smooth or finely rugulose or roughly warty (in the Hex River mountains), olivaceous, 0.2-0.4 m tall, diameter at base 1-1.6 mm, diameter at apex 0.2-0.6 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 5-35 mm long, pale brown below, apical 3/4 membranous, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying (more membranous, taking up the upper 3/4), hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, rounded. Sheath-mucro hair-like (lost even before the membranous apex decays), straight and erect, 2-8 mm long, the largely membranous, closely convoluted sheaths are typical of this species. Males: male inflorescence with 2-5 spikelets or 6-10 spikelets or 11-20 spikelets, paniculate, 10-50 mm long, 4-10 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, taller than spikelets, chartaceous or membranous, apical 3/4 membranous, soon decaying. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical or obovate, apex rounded, 3.5-6.5 mm, 2.5-4 mm, with 4-15 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts taller than flowers, 2-3.8 mm long, ovate, acuminate, bony or cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 1.8-2.1 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals chartaceous or membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous or keel sparsely villous. Anthers 0.8-1.2 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence linear or racemose, 20-70 mm long, 7-15 mm wide, with 2-5 spikelets or 6-10 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous (with the apical halves soon rotting away). Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, obovate, apex rounded, 6-10 mm long, with 4-6 flowers, with 0-3 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 3.5-6 mm long, ovate, acuminate, bony or cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.4-4.1 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous, glabrous and smooth or keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices rounded or obtuse, inner whorl longer than outer or inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2.8-4.1 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 2.8-4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 3-4 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, papery to leathery, not winged. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth, 2-3 mm long, 1 mm diam., shape in side view elliptical, shape in top view triangular in cross section (keels quite pointed), brown (reddish). Elaiosome absent.
