Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.15–0.65 m tall, basal diameter 0.01–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.2 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely warty or finely rugulose, green, 0.15–0.65 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–1.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.4–1.2 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches present or absent. Sterile branches present while flowering. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, loosely convoluted, 6–20 mm long, margins entire, green or orange/reddish-brown or tan, with membranous margin, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders tall, acute, hyaline shoulder 0.5–1 of sheath body length, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or obtuse. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1–5 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets, paniculate, 10–50 mm long, 6–18 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous (rather tough, sturdy). Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex acute or undifferentiated, 8–13 mm, 2.5–3.5 mm, with 10–16 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers, 5–7 mm long, oblong, acute or acuminate or aciculate, margins entire, coriaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body or between half and as long as the bract body, bract apices often recurved. Male flower 4.5–6.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 2–2.5 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or racemose, 10–35 mm long, 8–12 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet pedicel simple, elliptical or ovate or undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 8–12 mm long, with 5–16 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect or reflexed, 7–9 mm long, oblong or elliptical (broadly), rounded or acute or acuminate or aciculate, coriaceous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn less than half as long as the bract body or between half and as long as the bract body. Female flower 4–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals chartaceous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or ovate (broader at the base but often with parallel sides), 4–5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate (broader at the base but often with parallel sides), 4–5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, white, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.64–)2(–2.4) mm long, (1.16–)1.33(–1.52) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter triangular in cross section, silvery or white (sometimes nearly translucent), pitted.
