Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.15–0.2 m tall, basal diameter 0.05 m, crown diameter 0.2–0.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth, olivaceous, 0.15–0.2 m tall, diameter at base 0.6–1.2 mm, diameter at apex 0.8–1.2 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20–40 mm long, margins entire, reddish brown, sometimes with a coppery or golden hue, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro absent or penicellate, straight and erect, 2–5 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 15–30 mm long, 5–15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex undifferentiated, 10–16 mm, 4–7 mm, with 10–20 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 10–15 mm long, oblong, obtuse or acuminate, cartilaginous (quite thick), bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body, tips of bracts and awns recurved. Male flower 6–11 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong (narrow, almost linear), inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 3–3.8 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous (thick). Female spikelet sessile, obovate, apex undifferentiated, 10–25 mm long, with 10–14 flowers, with 2–3 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, reflexed, 10–15 mm long, oblong, acuminate, coriaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 4–6 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals chartaceous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner whorl shorter than outer (slightly). Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 3.5–4 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 2.5–3.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, 2.
