Vegetative parts: plants tangled, 0.2–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–1 m, crown diameter 0.1–2 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons or with stolons. Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.2–0.45 m tall, diameter at base 1.2–2.3 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 4–18 mm long, margins entire, deep orange to reddish-brown, with fine tan speckles seen at magnification (*10), upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent or membranous margins continuing behind awn (some specimens have sheaths with and others without hyaline shoulders), apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate or hair-like, straight and erect or recurved or twisted (when longer, they are often recurved or twisted), 1–5 mm long.
Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 5–20 mm long, 1.5–5 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets or as tall as spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical, apex acute or undifferentiated, 5–8 mm, 1.2–1.6 mm, with 3–10 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 2.5–3.5 mm long, ovate, acute, coriaceous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2.5–3.3 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, ovate, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous. Anthers 1.2–1.6 mm long, exserted from the flowers.
Females: female inflorescence interrupted (At most 2 spikelets), 5–10 mm long, 1–5 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets (usually single but sometimes there are 2 spikelets per inflorescence). Female spathes shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, obovate or undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 5–10 mm long, with 2–5 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 4–7 mm long, oblong or ovate, obtuse, coriaceous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4–6.5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals coriaceous or cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body or midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer (inner whorl at times slightly shorter than outer). Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–6.2 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 4–6.2 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 4–6 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary with 1 locule, dehiscent.
Fruit: seed (1.68–)1.95(–2.24) mm long, (1.12–)1.49(–1.84) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter elliptical in cross section, grey or white, pitted.
