Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.6–1.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.3–0.6 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or punctate (punctate at high magnification, larger than 25*), green or olivaceous, 0.5–1.5 m tall, diameter at base 2–5.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.4–1 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 5–30 mm long, reddish-brown with dense tan speckles, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous or broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or obtuse. Sheath-mucro absent or penicellate or hair-like (quite slender), straight and erect, 0.5–3 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets, paniculate or globose (often spikelets are quite dense), 10–120 mm long, 3–17 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or elliptical, at least some curved, apex acute or undifferentiated, 2.5–12 mm, 0.8–1.2 mm, with 5–30 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 1.5–2.5 mm long, elliptical or ovate or orbicular, rounded or obtuse, chartaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 1.3–2.2 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals (slightly), cartilaginous, petals chartaceous, oblong or elliptical or ovate, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, keel sparsely villous or keel densely villous. Anthers 0.9–1.3 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 8–80 mm long, 2–15 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, obovate or undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 6–12 mm long, with 4–10 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, erect, 4–5.5 mm long, ovate or orbicular, rounded or obtuse, coriaceous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3–5 mm long, regular, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals coriaceous or cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals densely villous, midrib raised, apices rounded or obtuse or acute, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 3–4.8 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 3–4.8 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 3–4.8 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles feathery, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary dehiscent. Fruit: seed shape in side view elliptical, diameter elliptical in cross section, translucent or white, smooth.
