Fertile culms sparingly branched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely warty, green, 0.1–0.25 m tall, diameter at base 0.4–1 mm, diameter at apex 0.1–0.4 mm. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 2–15 mm long, greenish or tan, often with brown speckles and wide margins of a glossy brown colour, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute.
