Vegetative parts: plants tufted or tangled, 0.05–0.25 m tall, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely warty, green, 0.05–0.25 m tall, diameter at base 0.2–0.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.1–0.2 mm, terminal parts flexuose. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 1.5–7 mm long, margins entire, tan with reddish-brown speckles, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body, hyaline shoulders membranous margins continuing behind awn, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, obtuse or rounded. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 0.5–1.8 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets, racemose, 3–55 mm long (this measurement refers to the length from the base of the lowest spikelet on the culm to the uppermost spikelet; 3 mm is possible when there is only one spikelet), 1–5 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, elliptical or undifferentiated (elliptical when spikelet one-flowered but undifferentiated when consisting of 2 orr 3 flowers), apex acute or undifferentiated, 2.5–4.5 mm, 0.6–1.5 mm, with 1–4 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 2–2.8 mm long, elliptical or obovate, rounded or obtuse or acute, margins entire, cartilaginous, bract upper margin membranous, thinner texture than the body, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–2.8 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 0.8–1.2 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 3–50 mm long, 2–5 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 2–2.5 mm long, with 1–2 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts as tall as flowers, erect, obovate, obtuse or acute, coriaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin membranous, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 1.8–2.5 mm long, with four tepals. Female tepals chartaceous or cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth or keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body or midrib raised (both occur), margins entire, apices obtuse or acute, inner whorl shorter than outer (slightly). Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 2–2.4 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or elliptical or ovate, 1.5–2.1 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or elliptical or ovate, 1.5–2.1 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles red, 2. Style bases fused to form a pillar. Ovary dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.16–)1.25(–1.44) mm long, (0.84–)0.94(–1.04) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter somewhat flattened in cross section or plano-convex in cross section, white, colliculate; funicular elaiosome absent.
