Vegetative parts: plants clumped, 1–2 m tall, basal diameter 1–2 m, crown diameter 1–2 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 8–12 mm in diam., culms 10–20 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous, 1–2 m tall, diameter at base 3–5 mm, diameter at apex 1.5–2.5 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches present. Sterile branches present post flowering. Sheaths closely convoluted, 25–45 mm long, dark brown, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro absent. Sterile branch leaf-sheath 1–1.5 mm long, hyaline shoulder 2–3 mm long, leaf-blade 3–5 mm long; leaf blade 0.1–0.3 mm wide. Males: male inflorescence with 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 150–350 mm long, 50–70 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, elliptical, apex acute, 4–6 mm, 2–3 mm, with 4–6 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 2–3 mm long, oblong, obtuse, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 2–3 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity or sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 1–1.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence linear or paniculate, 170–300 mm long, 15–40 mm wide, with 101–500 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, chartaceous. Female spikelet pedicel simple or pedicel sparsely branching, elliptical or ovate, apex truncate or rounded or obtuse, 4–6 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 2–4 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 1.5–3.5 mm long, square or orbicular, rounded or obtuse, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, paler than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3.8–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 3.8–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3.8–5 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 3.8–5 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent.
