Galpin, E.E., a banker and naturalist, collected widely in South Africa from 1881 to 1940, mostly in the summer-rainfall parts of the country. His collections formed the nucleus of what eventually became the National Herbarium in Pretoria.
Vegetative parts: plants tufted?, 0.3–0.7 m tall, with stolons. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 2–4 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets, racemose, 10–35 mm long, 7–12 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, coriaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, oblong or ovate, apex rounded or obtuse, 7–12 mm, 5–6 mm, with 5–12 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile or shorter than the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts as tall as flowers, 3–5 mm long, ovate, acute, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 3.5–4 mm long. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous. Female spikelet sessile or pedicel simple, oblong or ovate, apex rounded, 10–20 mm long, with 5–10 flowers, with 0–2 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 7–12 mm long, ovate, acute, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent or less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 4–4.8 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, keels of lateral sepals sparsely villous, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 4–4.8 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 4–4.8 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 3.4–4.2 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (1.08–)1.21(–1.28) mm long, (0.64–)0.83(–0.92) mm in diameter, shape in side view ovate, shape in diameter somewhat flattened in cross section, brown, brittle, white ornamentation (but only broken and poor seeds seen).
