Vegetative parts: plants mat-Forming, 0.15-0.5 m tall, basal diameter 1-10 m, crown diameter 1-10 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome long and slender, with culms clustered, each culm cluster with a number of diverging rhizomes, 1.2-1.8 mm in diam., culms 51-100 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched, compressed, solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.15-0.4 m tall, diameter at base 0.5-1.5 mm, diameter at apex 0.4-0.8 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present, loosely convoluted, 7-15 mm long, margins entire, light reddish-brown with tan speckles, some sheaths have a golden sheen (under magnification), upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 5-10 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 11-20 spikelets or 21-50 spikelets or 50-100 spikelets, paniculate, 15-150 mm long, 5-15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets (but not very large or overlapping), cartilaginous. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 2.5-4 mm, 1-1.5 mm, with 2 flowers, pedicels longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, 1.5-2 mm long, elliptical or ovate or orbicular, rounded or obtuse, margins entire, chartaceous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent. Male flower 1.5-2 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong or ovate, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 0.8-1.1 mm long, included in the flowers. Females: female inflorescence interrupted or linear, 20-100 mm long, 7-10 mm wide, with 6-10 spikelets or 11-20 spikelets or 21-50 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets (though only marginally, the spathes are rather small and don't overlap with each other), not obscuring spikelet or obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous (quite thin). Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, elliptical or undifferentiated, apex obtuse or undifferentiated, 3.5-5 mm long, with 1-2 flowers, with 1 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, erect, 1.5-2.5 mm long, oblong, acuminate, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn minute or absent. Female flower 2.5-3 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib raised, margins entire, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals conduplicate, 2.2-2.8 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 2.2-2.8 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate (with a short narrow 'stalk' at the base), 2.2-2.8 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall (Ovary wall with no special modifications). Perianth presence on fruits persistent, papery to leathery, not winged. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth.
