Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.6-2 m tall, basal diameter 0.2-0.6 m, crown diameter 0.5-1.5 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons or with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 4-6 mm in diam., culms 5-7 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, olivaceous, 0.6-1.5 m tall, diameter at base 2-4 mm, diameter at apex 1-3 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present, loosely convoluted, 35-50 mm long, margins entire, dark brown with tan margins, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute or obtuse. Sheath-mucro absent or penicellate, straight and erect, 0.8-1.2 mm long. Males: male inflorescence with 21-50 spikelets or 50-100 spikelets, paniculate, 50-100 mm long, 15-25 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous (very thick and sturdy). Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 3.5-5 mm, 2-4.5 mm, with 2-4 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts shorter than flowers, 2-2.6 mm long, ovate or orbicular, rounded or obtuse or acute, margins entire, cartilaginous (sturdy), bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, dark brown to black, somewhat shrivelled, the lower sterile bracts broader than the upper, fertile bracts, all densely packed. Male flower 3-3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, bony or coriaceous or cartilaginous, oblong or ovate (inner ones are oblong and outer tepals are generally more ovate), inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate (laterals more keeled than odd tepal), glabrous. Anthers 1.5-2.2 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence interrupted, 25-115 mm long, 12-25 mm wide, with 11-20 spikelets or 21-50 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet or obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous (almost bony). Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet pedicel sparsely branching, undifferentiated, apex undifferentiated, 4.5-7 mm long, with 2-4 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, erect, 1-3.5 mm long, ovate or orbicular (with a very broad base wrapped around the base of the flower), rounded or obtuse, cartilaginous (very thick and sturdy), apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3.5-5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals bony, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body or midrib raised, margins entire, apices obtuse or acute, inner whorl longer than outer or inner and outer whorls the same length.
