Vegetative parts: plants clumped, 0.8–1.5 m tall, basal diameter 2–5 m, crown diameter 2–5 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome long and slender, culms isolated and widely spaced, 3.5–7 mm in diam., culms 40–100 mm apart. Fertile culms branching, round (not compressed), solid or with a small central cavity, smooth or finely rugulose, green, 0.8–1.5 m tall, diameter at base 3.5–5.5 mm, diameter at apex 1.2–2 mm. Branch axil indumentum absent. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches absent. Sheaths more than 1 per culm, dropping off, with an abscission line present, loosely convoluted, 30–45 mm long, margins entire, reddish brown, upper 1/3 in colour and texture similar to the lower 2/3, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 1–2 mm long, sheaths dropped by flowering, and sheaths only seen on young, elongating shoots. Males: male inflorescence with 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 60–220 mm long, 10–25 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, dropped on all specimens seen. Male spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, ovate or orbicular, apex rounded or undifferentiated, 3–5 mm, 2–3 mm, with 5–10 flowers, pedicels as long as the spikelets, terete or angular. Male bracts shorter than flowers, 1–1.5 mm long, orbicular, rounded, margins entire, chartaceous or cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, Lower bracts almost as tall as flowers, upper less than half as tall as flowers. Male flower 1.5–2 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous, oblong or ovate, inner tepals longer than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1–1.2 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence linear, 60–120 mm long, 10 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous. Female spathellae inconspicuous or absent. Female spikelet sessile, orbicular, apex rounded or obtuse or acute, 9–15 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 4–5 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers or as tall as flowers, erect, 4–5 mm long, orbicular, rounded, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, margins entire, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4–8 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel, six tepals. Female tepals bony or cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, midrib flush with the tepal body, margins entire, apices rounded or acute, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, hidden by bracts, or bracts are shorter than flowers, 5–6 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 5–6 mm long. Female inner tepals orbicular, 5–6 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 3 locules, dehiscent.
