Vegetative parts: plants clumped or tufted or tangled (Forming dense masses), 0.3–0.6 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–1 m, crown diameter 0.1–1 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, round (not compressed), smooth or finely rugulose, green or olivaceous, 0.2–0.6 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–1 mm, diameter at apex 0.4–0.6 mm. Sheaths persistent, with no abscission line, closely convoluted, 9–18 mm long, dark-brown to almost black, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body (yet the upper 1/3 very soon decays and drops), hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 1–5 mm long, with remarkable transversely elongated pits: these are unique in the family. Males: male inflorescence with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets (usually solitary), racemose, 20–60 mm long, 5–10 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, like the floral bracts, cartilaginous, with the same transverse holes as the sheaths and bracts. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets erect on stiff pedicels or sessile, linear, apex acute, 15–30 mm, 5–14 mm, with 3–10 flowers, pedicels absent ie spikelets sessile. Male bracts taller than flowers, 5–15 mm long, linear, acute, lax, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, dark brown, with transverse pits. Male flower 3.3–5.3 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals membranous, linear, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate, glabrous. Anthers 1.4–2.4 mm long, exserted from the flowers. Pistillode present. Females: female inflorescence sparsely paniculate, 20–150 mm long, 5–15 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile, linear or oblong, apex acute, 15–30 mm long, with 2–8 flowers, with 0–2 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 6–12 mm long, oblong, acute, cartilaginous (with remarkable transverse pitting), apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, lax, exposing spikelet axis, awn minute or absent. Female flower 3–4 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous or cartilaginous, scabrid all over, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute (sepals curved outwards exposing the flowers), inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 3–4 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 2–3 mm long. Staminodes present. Styles feathery, white, 3. Style bases free. Ovary with 2 locules, dehiscent. Fruit: seed (0.96–)1.07(–1.25) mm long, (0.6–)0.68(–0.76) mm in diameter, shape in side view elliptical, shape in diameter round in cross section, brown, pitted (very finely so).
