Vegetative parts: plants mat-Forming, 0.2–0.5 m tall, basal diameter 1–5 m, crown diameter 1–5 m, with rhizomes or with stolons (technically these structures are stolons). Rhizome spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., culms 3–10 mm apart. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, smooth or finely rugulose, green, 0.2–0.3 m tall, diameter at base 0.5–1.3 mm, diameter at apex 0.2–0.5 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted or loosely convoluted, 10–25 mm long, brown to red-brown, occasionally green, apical margins coriaceous, like the rest of the body or narrowly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate. Sheath-mucro awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 3–15 mm long, thinner at the apex and margins, awn very massive. Males: male inflorescence with indefinite spikelets, Racemose or paniculate, 10–30 mm long, 4–6 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous, Lower spathes tightly envelope the spikelets and the more distal spathes. Male flowers not aggregated into spikelets. Male bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers, 4–9 mm long, linear, acute, lax, membranous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, very similar to tepals. Male flower 2–3 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, membranous, linear, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 1.5–3 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence linear or racemose, 20–45 mm long, 2–5 mm wide, with 1 spikelet or 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, obscuring spikelet, persistent, cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile, linear or elliptical, apex acute, 8–10 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts shorter than flowers, 2–4 mm long, oblong, acute, chartaceous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 6–8 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib raised, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 6.5–7.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 6.5–7.5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 6.5–7.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose, 2. Style bases seated on a stylopodium. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a hard woody ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, membranous, as tall as nuts or persistent, membranous, shorter than nut. Nut cap smooth, wall smooth, (5.83–)6.44(–7) mm long, (2–)2.81(–4.17) mm diam., shape in side view elliptical, shape in top view round in cross section, tan. Elaiosome absent.
