Vegetative parts: plants clumped or tufted, 0.5–1.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.3–3 m, crown diameter 0.3–3 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 7–8 mm in diam., culms 10–15 mm apart. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, striate, olivaceous or speckled golden (speckled golden-brown), 0.5–1.5 m tall, diameter at base 1–6 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Sheaths loosely convoluted, 7–30 mm long, brown, upper 1/3 in colour and texture abruptly different from the base, and soon decaying, apical margins broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate or acute. Sheath-mucro absent or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect or twisted (very occasionally twisted), 3–10 mm long, often somewhat expanded and erect-spreading at the apex.
Males: male inflorescence with indefinite spikelets, Racemose or paniculate, 20–35 mm long, 5–20 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent or caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous, expanded, sheath-like, purple-brown at apex. Male flowers not aggregated into spikelets. Male bracts taller than flowers, 4–17 mm long, linear, acute, lax, chartaceous or membranous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, reddish, with pale margins. Male flower 2–2.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, chartaceous or membranous, linear, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 1.5–2.5 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent.
Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet (Usually, occasionally with two spikelets). Female spathes shorter than the spikelets, persistent, cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile, obovate or obtriangular, apex truncate or rounded, 10–35 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 5–10 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 10–35 mm long, oblong, acuminate, chartaceous or cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract or darker than body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 7–10 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous or membranous, glabrous and smooth, smaller than nut and not obscuring the nut surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute or acuminate, inner and outer whorls the same length or inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 2–4 mm long. Female odd outer tepal ovate, 2–4 mm long. Female inner tepals ovate, 2–4 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose (and remarkably short, seated directly on the apex of the ovary), pink (probably), 2. Style bases seated on a stylopodium. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent.
Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a hard woody ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, membranous, shorter than nut. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall pitted, 7–9 mm long, 5–6 mm diam., shape in side view elliptical, shape in top view round in cross section, brown. Elaiosome absent.
