Vegetative parts: plants tufted or tangled, 0.3–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.1–0.3 m, crown diameter 0.5–1.5 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome very short with culms aggregated at base or spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 3–6 mm in diam., culms 1–20 mm apart. Fertile culms sparingly branched or branching, smooth, olivaceous or speckled golden, 0.3–1 m tall, diameter at base 1–3 mm, diameter at apex 0.5–1 mm. Sheaths loosely convoluted, 10–35 mm long, brown or grey, upper 1/3 in colour and texture abruptly different from the base, and soon decaying, apical margins broadly membranous, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acuminate or acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate or awl- or needleshaped, straight and erect, 2–5 mm long, older sheaths truncate due to membranous apex decaying. Males: male inflorescence with indefinite spikelets, Racemose or paniculate (inflorescences in this species are difficult to distinguish, as culms are branched all along their lengths - as such, inflorescence details have been taken from Pillans' book), 20–60 mm long, 5–15 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes caducous, taller than spikelets, cartilaginous, sheath-like, but expanded. Male flowers not aggregated into spikelets. Male bracts taller than flowers, 6–10 mm long, linear, acute, lax, membranous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, Scarcely different from tepals. Male flower 2–4 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, membranous, linear, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals as other tepals, glabrous. Anthers 1.4–3 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence with 1 spikelet. Female spathes as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent or caducous, chartaceous or cartilaginous. Female spikelet sessile, obovate or obtriangular, apex truncate or rounded, 15–20 mm long, with 1 flowers, with 5–10 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 8–14 mm long, oblong or ovate, acute or acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, darker than body of bract, awn less than half as long as the bract body. Female flower 6–9 mm long, with a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous or membranous, glabrous and smooth, smaller than nut and not obscuring the nut surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices rounded or obtuse, inner whorl longer than outer or inner and outer whorls the same length. Female outer lateral tepals like other tepals, 4–7 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong or obovate, 4–7 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or obovate, 3–7 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose, red, 2. Style bases free. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a hard woody ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, membranous, as tall as nuts or persistent, membranous, shorter than nut. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall pitted, (4.83–)6.97(–7.83) mm long, 2.7–4.3 mm diam., shape in side view elliptical or obovate, shape in top view round in cross section, brown. Elaiosome present, olivacous, 1–2 mm long, less than half as long as nut.
