Vegetative parts: plants clumped, 1–3 m tall, basal diameter 1–4 m, crown diameter 1–4 m, with rhizomes. Rhizome spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched, culms evenly spaced, 4–8 mm in diam., culms 5–20 mm apart. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous (browns in some specimens- due to drying once mounted?), 1–2 m tall, diameter at base 2.5–4.5 mm, diameter at apex 1.5–2.5 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 30–40 mm long, brown, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying (but rather narrowly so), hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro absent, older sheaths decay at the apices. Males: male inflorescence with 21–50 spikelets or 50–100 spikelets or 101–500 spikelets, paniculate, 170–300 mm long, 40–70 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, oblong, apex rounded, 6–16 mm, 3–4 mm, with 20–46 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts as tall as flowers or taller than flowers, 2.5–4 mm long, oblong, acute, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, very dark coloured. Male flower 2.5–3.2 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, cartilaginous, petals chartaceous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals conduplicate or keeled or winged, glabrous. Anthers 1.5–2 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence linear or paniculate or racemose, 100–300 mm long, 15–30 mm wide, with 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets. Female spathes shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous. Female spikelet pedicel simple or pedicel sparsely branching, oblong, apex rounded, 10–30 mm long, with 24–60 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 6–11 mm long, linear or oblong, acute, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 4.3–5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals cartilaginous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, wings entire, wings lateral sepals decurrent, without grooves, wider than body, exserted past bracts and overlapping with one another, 4.3–5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal linear or oblong, 3.5–4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong or ovate, 3–3.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose, white, 1. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, winged. Shape of winged dispersal unit orbicular. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth, (2.16–)2.25(–2.4) mm long, (1.72–)1.77(–1.88) mm diam., shape in side view elliptical or round, shape in top view elliptical in cross section (with lateral ridges), brown. Elaiosome absent.
