Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.6–1 m tall, basal diameter 0.05–0.2 m, crown diameter 0.5–0.8 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous, 0.6–1 m tall, diameter at base 1.5–2.5 mm, diameter at apex 1.2–2.2 mm. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20–40 mm long, green at base, apically grey, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro absent, distinctive green base to the sheaths, apical half grey and decaying. Males: male inflorescence with 11–20 spikelets or 21–50 spikelets, paniculate, 40–110 mm long, 30–55 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, oblong, apex rounded, 6–13 mm, 5–7 mm, with 12–30 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers or more than twice as tall as flowers, 4.5–5.5 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn minute or absent, bract apices reflexed somewhat, giving the spikelet a bristly appearance. Male flower 2.5–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals and petals the same rigidity, cartilaginous, oblong, inner and outer tepals the same length. Male outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, glabrous. Anthers 1.7 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence paniculate or racemose, 50–100 mm long, 10–40 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets or 6–10 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent, chartaceous. Female spikelet pedicel simple or pedicel sparsely branching, oblong, apex rounded, 20–30 mm long, with 10–14 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers or at least twice as long as flowers, reflexed, 10–12 mm long, ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin like rest of bract, same as body of bract, awn minute or absent. Female flower 5–7.5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals coriaceous, glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices obtuse, inner whorl shorter than outer. Female outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, wings entire, wings lateral sepals decurrent, and with grooves between them, narrower than body, 5–7.5 mm long (much of this variation is the result of variation of the pedicel length). Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–4 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong, 2.8–3.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose, white, 1. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, winged. Shape of winged dispersal unit oblong, narrower than long. Nut apex smooth, without a distinct cap, wall smooth (rough with tuberculate cells), (2.08–)2.24(–2.52) mm long, (1.56–)1.68(–1.8) mm diam., shape in side view elliptical, shape in top view elliptical in cross section, brown. Elaiosome absent.
