Vegetative parts: plants tufted, 0.2–0.5 m tall, basal diameter 0.01–0.03 m, crown diameter 0.1–0.3 m, compact, without spreading rhizomes or stolons. Fertile culms unbranched, smooth, olivaceous, 0.2–0.5 m tall, diameter at base 0.4–1 mm, diameter at apex 0.3–0.8 mm. Clusters of sterile branches at the nodes of the fertile branches present. Sterile branches present while flowering. Sheaths closely convoluted, 20–45 mm long, tan-grey, apical margins broadly chartaceous and soon decaying, hyaline shoulders absent, apex, excluding the membranous lobes, acute. Sheath-mucro penicellate, straight and erect, 2–4 mm long, very soon decaying apically, and so loosing all apical structure. Sterile branch leaf-sheath 3–4 mm long, hyaline shoulder 2–3 mm long, lacerated, leaf-blade 8–17 mm long; leaf blade 0.2–0.3 mm wide. Males: male inflorescence with 6–10 spikelets or 11–20 spikelets, paniculate, 30–70 mm long, 15–35 mm wide. Male inflorescence spathes persistent, upper margins lacerated and largely decayed at anthesis, shorter than spikelets, chartaceous. Male flowers in spikelets. Male spikelets pendulous on flexible pedicels, oblong, apex rounded, 5–20 mm, 3–4.5 mm, with 16–28 flowers, pedicels shorter than the spikelets or as long as the spikelets or longer than the spikelets, flattened. Male bracts taller than flowers, 5–8 mm long, oblong or ovate, acuminate, hyaline (outer 2/3) or chartaceous (middle), bract upper margin like body of bract, bract awn less than half as long as the bract body, distinctive spiky appearance from the acuminate to shortly awned bracts. Male flower 2.4–3.5 mm long. Male tepals sepals more rigid than petals, chartaceous, petals membranous, oblong, inner tepals shorter than outer tepals. Male outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, glabrous. Anthers 1.2–2 mm long, included in the flowers. Pistillode absent. Females: female inflorescence racemose, 20–70 mm long, 7–10 mm wide, with 2–5 spikelets. Female spathes longer than the spikelets, not obscuring spikelet, persistent (decaying), chartaceous. Female spikelet pedicel simple, elliptical or ovate, apex rounded, 10–18 mm long, with 5–12 flowers, with 0 sterile bracts. Female bracts taller than flowers, 5–10 mm long, oblong or ovate, acuminate, cartilaginous, apical margin membranous, paler than body of bract, awn less than half as long as the bract body or between half and as long as the bract body. Female flower 4–5.5 mm long, without a fleshy pedicel. Female tepals chartaceous (sepals) or cartilaginous (petals), glabrous and smooth, at least as tall as nut, wrapped around it and obscuring the surface, midrib flush with the tepal body, apices acute, inner whorl longer than outer. Female outer lateral tepals keeled or winged, wings entire, narrower than body, exserted past bracts (at least in the apical portions of the bracts), 4–4.5 mm long. Female odd outer tepal oblong, 3–3.5 mm long. Female inner tepals oblong (the bases of the petals swell into longitudinally ribbed structures, which tightly clasp the developing nutlet, while the sepals remain quite papery. This is a quite unusual structure), 4–5.5 mm long. Staminodes absent. Styles plumose, white, 1. Ovary with 1 locule, indehiscent. Fruit: indehiscent fruits with a softer ovary wall. Perianth presence on fruits persistent, winged. Shape of winged dispersal unit oblong, narrower than long. Nut (1.32–)1.37(–1.44) mm long, (0.96–)1.11(–1.2) mm diam., shape in side view ovate, shape in top view elliptical in cross section, brown. Elaiosome absent.
